Dewalt Compact Reciprocating Saw Review

Here I review the Dewalt 20V MAX XR Compact Reciprocating Saw (DCS367)

Review

I’ve been wanting to upgrade my old corded reciprocating saw for some time now, so when I started using the old saw a bunch during my basement finish, the time had finally come. Here’s my thoughts regarding this Dewalt 20V MAX XR Compact Reciprocating Saw (DCS367).

Upon opening this tool-only box, not much comes out as expected – mostly just the tool along with the instruction manual. Some of the key features of the saw include:

  • 4-way blade installation – it has two slots at 90 degree angles from each other, and the blade can be inserted either way into each slot.
  • Light so you can see where you’re cutting
  • Variable speed trigger, with a lock for when you don’t want to accidentally activate the saw

I did a few 2×4 test cuts with a variety of batteries and here’s what I found:

  • With a fresh 5A battery, the saw performed flawlessly, as expected – this is probably the preferred battery size if you plan on doing a fair amount of cutting.
  • With a fresh 2A battery, the saw also cut very well – if you just have a few cuts to do, this will work fine.
  • With a nearly dead 2A battery, the saw cuts for a bit, then shuts off. It does immediately restart when you cycle the trigger, but then your cut time gets shorter every time you run the saw. Anyway, pretty much expected this, but gives an idea of what happens when your battery needs a recharge.

Bottom line, I’d give this a four and half out of five stars, and would recommend it to others. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 of 5 was it’s pretty easy to start opening up the blade lock when you are sawing. Note the lock requires a bit of force to actually unlock, so you’re highly unlikely to actually unlock the blade while sawing, but it just seems this could be located somewhere else that wouldn’t be right where your fingers sit while cutting. Anyway, still a great saw – if you’re looking to buy one and would like to support my efforts at no cost to you, please use one of the Amazon links below.
