RV Closet Shelf Repair
Here I go through the process of reattaching one end of the shelf in our RV master closet.
Summary:
During our last RV trip, we started having problems with clothes falling off the rod in our master closet, then I also noticed the left half of the entire shelf was loose. Here I discuss the process of reattaching both the shelf and the closet rod. Detailed Description:
- Start by scoping out exactly what you’ll need for your project
- Can you reuse anything from the existing install, or do you need new brackets, screws or mounts?
- What tools do you need
- Remove any existing hardware that needs to be replaced – in my case this simply entailed removing the broken rod bracket as well as the screw that was holding up the left end of the shelf.
- Predrill the shelf and wall where the new shelf connection point will be going. If your wall will accommodate, utilize the metal anchors I list above – sometimes predrilling these helps, otherwise you can simply hammer them into the wall where needed, then screw into place. Note my anchor apparently ran into something rather substantial and sheared off, though there was still enough into the wall for the screw to attach, so I then installed the new screw through the shelf and into the anchor. In my case I drilled a second hole through the shelf and wall to reinstall the screw I had pulled out earlier, giving two anchor points for the shelf.
- For the rod bracket, since my anchor didn’t go in very well for the shelf, I decided to utilize the two screws off the old plastic rod bracket to install the new metal bracket. Predrilling the proper size hole, these screws went in and seem to hold reasonably well.
- And that’s it – now you can check this one off your list!! 8^)
