Dewalt String Trimmer Head Replacement and String Refill
Here I replace the head on our 20V Max Dewalt string trimmer, then refill it with string.
Summary:
We’ve had this Dewalt trimmer for probably six years or so, and the head was starting to get pretty warn. As such, I decided a new one was in order, so got it replaced as shown here. Parts:
Tools:
- Small screw driver or ice pick
- Bench vise (makes working on the unit easier)
Detailed Description:
- Start by scoping out exactly what you’ll need for your project
- Get a new trimmer head
- Grab some new trimmer string if needed
- Find something you can use to lock the head for removal – I used an ice pick
- It’s easiest if you can secure the trimmer somehow – my bench vise worked great for this.
- Line up the removal holes, insert your locking tool, the twist off the head CLOCKWISE.
- There’s a small plate underneath – mine had just a little grass underneath, so removed it, then replaced the plate, making sure it sat all the way down on the shaft with the flats lined up.
- Spin on the new head COUNTERCLOCKWISE and snug it up good.
- My head came with string, but for demo, I removed it to show reloading some new string.
- Note the top of the head comes off pretty easy if needed (to clean out any parts of string or grass) by pressing on the indented portions on the side of the head.
- To install new string (I generally use about 12′, though my new head came with about 18′) simply line up the white lines on the side by holding the large part of the head and spinning the smaller portion.
- Once you have these lined up, simply insert one end of your new string though the hole. It should come out the other side without much effort.
- At this point, pull the string through until you have 1/2 on either side of the head, then start spinning the small portion of the head while holding the larger (actually might work better to hold the small part and spin the larger if possible) and you’ll have it loaded up in no time!
- Check this one off your list!! 8^)
