Radon Caulking Application Method Comparison

Here I compare a couple different methods of applying radon caulk to seal up cracks in our basement

Summary:

I test a couple methods of applying radon caulking in our basement. The first method simply uses a putty knife, while the second uses a plastic spoon attached to the caulk gun. Detailed Description:

  • Start by scoping out exactly what you’ll need for your project
    • How many linear feet do you need to caulk (I used about one 10oz tube per 8 linear feet)?
    • Do you have all the tools and supplies you need?
  • Vacuum all cracks and corners you plan to caulk.
  • Load the caulk gun with a tube of caulk, then cut off enough to allow for a 1/4-1/2″ bead of caulk to exit the tube.
  • Starting in one spot, place about a 1/2″ bead of caulk in the corners, and maybe 3/8″ in expansion joints.
  • While I tested a couple different methods, I suggest simply using the back of the spoon to spread the caulk in almost all situations (though using a putty knife is a close second). For where your slab meets the foundation, this creates a nice fillet that should provide a great seal for the radon system.
  • Spend a few hours working around the basement, then that’s it!
  • Check this one off your list!! 8^)
