RV Propane Tank Strap Repair/Replace
Here I repair/replace a set of broken propane tank retention straps
Summary:
After the last trip with our 5th wheel I noticed one of the straps holding in our propane tank wasn’t latching correctly. Digging deeper, I found it had actually sheared off due to the tight angle where it was bolted to the back of the compartment. Here I go through the process to replace the strap(s) and try to adjust the install method to hopefully reduce the chance of future failure. Detailed Description:
- Start by scoping out exactly what you’ll need for your project
- What size is your propane tank, and what size of straps will you need
- Will you need new screws to attach the straps
- What tools do you need to finish the job
- Start by removing the propane tank and then remove the straps to be replaced.
- In my case, I added the washers/spacers behind the new mounting screws, so ended up drilling out the holes on the new straps to about 3/8″ to give a little leeway for the strap to push back in the center. Be particularly careful if you have to drill the strap – secure it well so it the drill bit can’t grab onto it and make a spinning cutter out of it!
- Install the strap as needed, with any additional washers used as spacers.
- Install the tank and ensure all fits well and nothing is loose.
- Check this one off your list!! 8^)
